About Us
About Mount Calvary Baptist Church
Mount Calvary Baptist Church is a Christ-centered congregation committed to advancing the kingdom of Jesus Christ. We exist to honor God through the faithful preaching of the Gospel, meaningful worship, and lives that reflect biblical truth and Christian love.
Our mission is carried out through the public worship of God, the teaching of Scripture, and the encouragement of consistent Christian living among our members. We believe spiritual growth is nurtured through Christian education, prayer, and fellowship, equipping believers to live out their faith both within the church and in everyday life.
We are also devoted to sharing the Gospel beyond our walls. Through personal evangelism and missionary outreach, we seek to proclaim the message of salvation and serve others in the name of Christ. As a church family, we strive to be a welcoming place where individuals and families can grow spiritually, build meaningful relationships, and discover their purpose in Christ.
Our History
Mount Calvary Baptist Church was established in August 1917, when a small group of devoted believers relocated from Georgia to Hartford, Connecticut with a shared desire to worship God and build a faith-centered community. In its early years, the church met in various locations before purchasing its first property on Charter Oak Avenue, laying a strong foundation for future growth.
Over the decades, Mount Calvary Baptist Church has been guided by faithful pastors who helped shape its spiritual direction and expand its ministry. In the mid-20th century, the congregation moved to its current location on Bethel Street, where both the lower and upper sanctuaries were completed and the church continued to flourish through worship, Christian education, and community outreach.
In 1992, God placed Dr. Richard Lee Nash as Senior Pastor of Mount Calvary Baptist Church. Dr. Nash faithfully served the congregation for over 31 years, leading with unwavering dedication, integrity, and a deep love for God’s Word. Known for his unapologetic preaching and teaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, Dr. Nash shepherded the church through spiritual growth, facility improvements, expanded ministries, and continued outreach to the Hartford community. His leadership left a lasting impact on generations of members and the broader body of Christ.
Following Dr. Nash’s passing in July 2024, Mount Calvary Baptist Church entered a season of transition as the congregation seeks God’s guidance in prayerfully discerning its next pastor. During this time, the church remains committed to its mission of advancing the kingdom of Jesus Christ through worship, Gospel preaching, Christian living, evangelism, missions, and education.
Today, Mount Calvary Baptist Church stands on more than a century of faith, perseverance, and service. While honoring its rich history, the church looks forward with hope and trust in God’s continued plan, remaining rooted in Christ and united as a church family.
